He passed a great part of his life in prison for his protests, but became a symbol for his people and for the whole world.
He was born on July 18, 1918, in the tiny village of Mvezo. His birth name was Rolihlahla: he got the nickname "Nelson" from a teacher in school. After getting a degree in law, he became a leader in the African National Congress (ANC). At first he wanted to follow Mohandas Gandhi's non-violence approach. At one point he started to doubt that this approach would work and started up an armed branch of the ANC. He planned to bomb certain buildings, but only the buildings. He wanted to make sure that no one would be hurt. He was classified as a terrorist by the South African government and sent to prison.
Mandela would spend the next 27 years in prison and was finally released in 1990. Then he continued his campaign to end apartheid. In 1994 Mandela was awarded the Nobel Prize and in 1994 he won the election and became the first black president of South Africa.
In 2009, Mandela's birthday (July 18) was declared "Mandela Day" to promote global peace.
