FROM PRE-CELTIC TO ROMAN BRITAIN  

Six thousand years ago Britain was already inhabited: people grew cereals and wheat. In four centuries the inhabitants changed the landscape and built places for cerimonies like Stonhenge. They also started to work metals and produced pottery and leather.

The Celts arrived around 700 BC from Germany and settled in the country. They were tall, with blue eyes and blond hair. There were farmers, fishermen and hunters. They built forts on top of the hills as a defence. Women were nearly equal to men: they could choose the man they wanted to marry and could be leaders in wars.  

The Druids were the Celts' priests. They were important not only in religion but also in medicine, justice and education.

The Celts worshipped natural elements (like sun, moon and rivers) and believed in the transmigration of soul from one person to another. 

The Romans invaded Britain with Julius Cesar and conquered it with Claudius in 43/47 AD. Romans didn't control the whole island, in fact Emperor Adrian ordered to build a wall to mark the border between Britain and northern population, such as Scots and Picts.

Romans built roads (in order to better move soldiers and make commercial goods move easier) and also many towns and villages. The most important is Londinium, built on the river Thames.

Romans also brought in Britain their  culture, the latin language and religion. 

In 409 AD their control of Britain came to an end: Roman soldiers had to go back to Rome, in order to fight against Barbarians, and left the Celts to fight alone against the Saxon invaders.

Amleto=Protagonista della tragedia e principe di Danimarca. E' figlio della regina Gertrude e del compianto re Amleto e nipote dell'attuale re Claudio, suo zio. Amleto,che ha studiato presso l'università di Wittenberg, è un personaggio malinconico, indeciso, cinico e molto amareggiato dagli intrighi di suo zio e sua madre per impossessarsi del potere.

Claudio=Attuale re di Danimarca, zio di Amleto e suo antagonista nella tragedia. Claudio è il "cattivo", l'ambizioso uomo politico, guidato dalla sua sete di potere e senza scrupoli, che però mostra ogni tanto segni di umanità-->ad esempio il suo amore per Gertrude sembra sincero.

Gertrude=Regina di Danimarca e madre di Amleto, ora sposata con Claudio. Gertrude ama profondamente il figlio, ma è comunque una donna debole, superficiale.

Polonio=Ciambellano di Elsinore, padre di Laerte e di Ofelia.

Orazio=Amico di Amleto, compagno di studi presso l'università di Wittenberg. Orazio aiuta Amleto nella scoperta della verità e gli rimane fedele per tutta la tragedia. Quando Amleto muore, Orazio rimane in vita per raccontare la storia di Amleto.

Ofelia= Figlia di Polonio, di cui Amleto è stato innamorato. Impazzisce per il dolore quando il padre muore per mano di Amleto e terminerà la sua esistenza affogandosi in un corso d'acqua e scatenando l'ira del fratello Laerte che si vendicherà uccidendo Amleto.

La morte di Ofelia

Laerte=Figlio di Polonio e fratello di Ofelia. Giovane impulsivo, trascorre molto tempo in Francia.

Fortebraccio=Giovane principe di Norvegia, il cui padre è stato ucciso dal padre di Amleto, che vuole attaccare la Danimarca per vendicare la morte del padre.

Il fantasma=E' lo spettro del padre di Amleto, che sostiene di essere stato assassinato da Claudio e che invita Amleto a vendicarlo. Tuttavia, non è mai sicuro che il fantasma sia proprio il padre morto: Amleto ipotizza che lo spettro potrebbe essere il diavolo stesso, che vuole ingannarlo e fargli commettere un omicidio. La questione su chi sia il fantasma e da dove venga non viene mai risolta e svelata.

Rosencrantz e Guildenstern=Due cortigiani un po' maldestri, ex amici di Amleto, che vengono convocati da Gertrude e da Claudio per cercare di scoprire il motivo dello strano comportamento di Amleto.

Osric=Il cortigiano stolto che chiama Amleto al suo duello con Laerte.

Voltimand e Cornelius=Cortigiani che vengono inviati in Norvegia per convincere Fortebraccio a non attaccare la Danimarca.

Marcello e Bernardo=Le due guardie che per prime vedono il fantasma del sovrano camminare sui bastioni del castello. Marcello è presente quando Amleto incontra per la prima volta il fantasma.

Reynaldo=Servo di Polonio che viene inviato in Francia da Polonio stesso per controllare e spiare il figlio Laerte.

BREVE RIASSUNTO IL MAGO DI OZ IN INGLESE

The Wizard of Oz is the story of an orphan girl, Dorothy who lives with her uncle and aunt in Kansas. One day the farmhouse, with Dorothy and Toto inside, is caught up in a cyclone and deposited in the magical Land of Oz.  Despite the beauty of this land, Dorothy and Toto want to go back to Kansas. Along the way they meet a very unusual cast of characters - the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion. Together they go on a quest to see the Wizard of Oz, each of them seeking what they want most in life. Making their way along the Yellow Brick Road through a series of scaring encounters, they arrive at the Emerald City only to be told by the Wizard that they first must kill the Wicked Witch of the West before he will grant their wishes. They eventually overcome many dangerous challenges and when they return to the Great Oz, they accidentally find out that he is not a wizard after all. He was actually a man from Omaha who flew in an air balloon and got trapped in the magical land a quite long time before. He promises Dorothy that he would make an hot-air balloon for them to cross the desert surrounding the magical Land and get back to Kansas. But when the balloon launches, Dorothy misses the chance for she was chasing Toto through the crowd and the old man flew away. A guard on the City of Emeralds suggestes her to see Glinda, the Good Witch of the South and ask for her help. So once again, Dorothy and her friends go on a journey, to the Land of the South. This last journey is not as hard as the previous ones and end happily with Dorothy and Toto returning home.
