Mr Merriweather was dozing by the fireside. His newspaper slipped from his grasp, his head fell forward and he started to wander by the banks of a fast-flowing river. Then a coal slipped, the fire crackled and he woke up with a start.

He reached down to retrieve his newspaper and then remembered something that he wanted to ask his wife. But Mrs Merriweather was not there.

He listened for a while. The cottage seemed very quiet. Then he called out "Molly!" several times but received no reply. He shuffled out into the hall and saw that Molly's rainwear was missing from its accustomed hook. And her Wellingtons which always stood with the umbrellas in the umbrella stand had also gone. Whatever would have possessed her to go out on a night such as this?

Julie's Race

The dogsled race was about to begin. Julie’s team of dogs was lined up at the starting gate. Julie stood behind them. The air was so cold that she could see her breath. Other teams were lined up, too, and the dogs were excited. Julie kept her eyes on the clock. At exactly ten o’clock, she and the other racers yelled, "Mush!" The dogs knew that meant "Go!" They leapt forward and the race began!

Julie had trained months for this race, and she hoped she and her dogs would win. Hour after hour, day after day, Julie’s dogs pulled the sled in order to get in shape for the race.

Now, they ran over snowy hills and down into frozen valleys. They stopped only to rest and eat. They wanted to stay ahead of the other teams. The racers had to go a thousand miles across Alaska. Alaska is one of the coldest places on Earth. The dogs’ thick fur coats helped keep them warm in the cold wind and weather. In many places along the route, the snow was deep. Pieces of ice were as sharp as a knife. The ice could cut the dogs’ feet. To keep that from happening, Julie had put special booties on their feet.

At first, the dogs seemed to pull the sled very slowly. They were still getting used to the race. But on the third day out, they began to pull more quickly. They worked as a team and passed many of the other racers. Once, one of the sled’s runners slid into a hole and broke. Julie could have given up then, but she didn't. She fixed it and they kept going.

When they finally reached the finish line, they found out that they had come in first place! It was a great day for Julie and her dogs.

John, Rich, and I loved living on the farm in New Jersey. All that room to run and play and hid from each other. The fields went on forever, and we would race to get to the tree with the tire swing. There was even a pond to skate on in the winter. Dad grew so many vegetables that mom only had to buy milk and some meats at the store. But then the unthinkable happened.

Dad became ill and could not farm the  land anymore. Mom didn’t know what to do, so she decided to rent the land to another local farmer that needed more space. Mom used the money from the farm rental to pay the bills. Dad passed away, but we still managed to keep the farm going the best we could. Our uncle from a nearby town came and helped us plant and harvest the crops. He even took the crops to a “farmer’s market” where he sold many of the vegetables for extra money. We went on like this for a while, but it became too much for us to handle.

The small town of Oak Hill was looking for a place to put a community park. They knew that the farm land was going to be for sale and decided to ask mom if she was willing to sell the land to them. Mom told us that she was going to sell the land to the town so they could build a park. We moved near our uncle into a smaller house that mom was able to handle. Two months later, the town of Oak Hill told mom they were going to name the park after our dad. What an honor! We were even going to have a small plaque with Dad’s name on it. We now go to the park and see dad’s name each time we enter the gate. The park has a baseball field, swing sets, a pool, volleyball nets, and a nature trail. What a wonderful park, but the best part is we get to visit dad everytime we go there!

 The friends you have on a social networking site can help you enjoy your day at work, but don't expect too much from them as many of these "online friends" prefer to stay online only. My friend Julia met a friend of a friend, George, at a conference. They got on really well and started an online relationship. They found that thay had a lot in common. Their shared memories, and talked about their workmates. Sometimes they swapped more then twenty messages a day. Julia looked forward to receiving George's messages when arrived at work. After a few weeks, however, Julia asked George if he wanted to meet up after work, but he always found an excuse not to. Then she received a strange message from him explaining how he didn't want to have a relationship and how he had decided to stop contacting her. That was the end of the story, and she never heard from him again. You see, an online relationship takes a lot less energy than a face-to-face relationship. So a lot of people who don't really want the responsability will try online friends instead. It's easier and, if you have an argument, you can always just shut down your computer!
